Founded in 2001 by award winning Artistic Director Cynthia Word, Word Dance Theater has created and performed innovative productions in the Washington, D.C. area and beyond. With innovative works such as Chambers of the Heart, Wild Hearts: Sappho and Isadora, Revolutionary! Isadora Duncan, Preludes: Duncan, Sand & Chopin, and its latest Dance Metro DC award winning production, Once Wild: Isadora in Russia, Word Dance Theater pays homage to Isadora Duncan’s technique, philosophy and revolutionary spirit, pushing the performing arts to new limits. Word Dance Theater brings together some of the best artistic minds in dance, theater, music, and production to create cross-disciplinary works that test the creative boundaries for artists, tells stories of the human spirit, and creates new experiences for audiences.
Word Dance Theater is proud to have performed in festivals and venues in New York, South Carolina and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Venues where Word Dance Theater have performed include, but are not limited to The Lansburgh Theater (Washington, DC), Piccolo Spoleto (Charleston, SC), The Harkness Center for Dance (New York, NY), The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (College Park, MD), and the ACS Theater of the American Embassy (Athens, Greece).
