Washington School for Girls

Word Dance Theater is a community partner with the Washington School for Girls. We provide 3 week-long residencies per year for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls in Anacostia, Washington DC.  The week of March 20 thru 24, Word Dance Theater, in partnership with the Philllips Collection led the students in choreographing and performing modern dances in The Washington Ballet studio located at THEARC every morning from 8:30 to noon. The girls took inspiration from paintings by courageous women like Isadora Duncan, Georgia O'Keeffe, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthalar, and created dances that revolved around earth's elements as it appeared in the artists’ works.

At the end of the week, the students took a field trip to The Phillips Collection in DC, where they were able to see the works of the women artists that they had learned about earlier in the week. It was such a wonderful and rich experience for the girls to experience their own creativity as they studied and danced about the courageous women artists.  We know these students will be courageous in the lives!
