Summer Intensive

Join Word Dance Theater in the last week of August for a summer send-off intensive in the technique and philosophy of Isadora Duncan. Throughout the week, students will explore the myths, deities, and queens of ancient Egypt through guided improvisation studies inspired by the art and artifacts of the great kingdoms. Daily classes will deepen each student’s individual study of Duncan dance and the natural forms of creative expression and the week will conclude with a group field trip to the National Geographic Museum’s Queens of Egypt exhibition where dancers will experience their inspirations first hand. Intensive will be led by Ms. Becky with assistants, accompanied by supplemental classes led by guest teachers Cynthia Word (Artistic Director of Word Dance Theater) and visual & performance artist Katie Macyshyn.

Monday through Thursday each session will consist of two expressive classes framed by the lore of Egyptian goddesses and queens, embodied in studies of Duncan repertory. Students will practice the Duncan technique steps and improvisations as great falcons, cobras, and lions, in addition to goddesses such as Nephthys and Isis (whose name is the root of our Isadora!), and the many manifestations of the goddess Hathor. The first class of the day will always be Duncan and the second class will always be led by a guest artist; sometimes movement and sometimes visual arts! Students can expect Duncan instruction from at least two Duncan instructors in addition to movement reflection, meditation, and visual artistic exploration through projects they will take home. On Friday, we will travel to the National Geographic museum to view the Queens of Egypt exhibition and share our discoveries in closing at the Dance Exchange as one community of Duncan dancers together (10 am - 3 pm).
